TOUCHLINES

ATLETICO MADRID will offer want-away strikers Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan to Tottenham for a combined price of £40m (RM200m) this summer.

REAL MADRID are ready to cut their losses on Kaka this summer – and Chelsea and AC Milan are currently leading the chase to sign him. The midfielder has struggled form and fitness since moving to Spain from Milan in 2009.

DANISH midfielder Christian Eriksen – a target for Liverpool – says Barcelona are the only club who could tempt him away from Ajax.

INTER MILAN are considering a move for Tottenham’s Croatian Luka Modric.

MANCHESTER UNITED winger Nani faces up to a month on the sidelines as the gash suffered to his knee during the 3-0 loss at Liverpool is worse than first thought.

WIGAN boss Roberto Martinez has been given a vote of confidence by chairman Dave Whelan, despite the club slumping to the bottom of the Premier League.

LIVERPOOL fear captain Steven Gerrard will require surgery on a troublesome groin injury and could miss much of the season run-in.

FORMER Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli has tipped Carlo Ancelotti to lead the club to the Champion League final this season. “They have got a great side with great players, experienced players. The are very hungry to win the Champion League because they have been so close for so many years. They deserve to get at least to the final and I’m sure they will,” said Vialli.

MANCHESTER UNITED could be boosted by the return of winger Antonio Valencia to their match-day squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

ENGLAND defender Rio Ferdinand hailed Massimo Busacca as the world’s best referee on his Twitter account – before the Italian showed Arsenal’s Robin van Persie a second yellow card for kicking the ball away in their defeat at Barcelona. Ferdinand later stood by his initial assessment, tweeting: “..... still the best ref for me, one decision doesn’t change that.”

Redknapp hails Spurs' 'fantastic achievement'

Manager wants 'anyone but Barça' in quarter-finals after knocking out Milan

William Gallas clears the ball from the Tottenham line to deny Milan's advancing striker Robinho a goal at White Hart Lane last night

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, claimed his team were "dreaming the impossible dream" after they held their nerve to come through a nail-biting goalless draw with Milan last night and seize a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Redknapp's team had to curb their natural attacking instincts to produce a defensive performance of character and determination to progress.
Tottenham came into the match needing only a 0-0 draw to see them through against the seven-times European champions, having emerged from the first leg in San Siro three weeks ago with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Peter Crouch's late goal.
That goal proved to be enough, although last night Serie A leaders Milan were the better side and came away from north London saying they felt "bitter" at the outcome.
Redknapp said he could hardly believe Tottenham's achievement in putting out such a major European side, but insisted he would be keeping his feet on the ground and would celebrate by having "a bacon sandwich, a cup of tea and taking my dogs out".
Redknapp added: "What we've achieved is an impossible dream. Nobody could've seen this coming, it's the first time we've ever played in the Champions League. It is a fantastic achievement. To win as tough a group as we had and then to beat Milan, top of Serie A, anything else is a bonus.
"I don't know how far we can go. We have done very well to make the last eight. If anyone had said that two years ago people would've said you were crazy. We deserve to be here. We won the group and kept two clean sheets against Milan."
The 1-0 aggregate victory puts Tottenham in the quarter-final draw on 18 March, and Redknapp admitted he would prefer to avoid Barcelona, after witnessing the Spaniards' 3-1 victory over Arsenal on Tuesday night.
"Barcelona gave one of the finest performances I've ever seen," Redknapp said. "They were amazing. Arsenal are a great team and pass teams off the pitch in our league but they looked out of their depth. Barcelona are on another level. Barcelona are the team you don't want to play."
Tottenham produced a display of defensive excellence, with Michael Dawson and William Gallas superb at the back, and the young Brazilian Sandro was magnificent in front of the back four. But goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes had to make a couple of sharp saves, and Gallas pulled off a spectacular goal-line clearance to deny Robinho.
Redknapp said: "It was nervy but fantastic. It was always going to be nervy. If people thought we were going to smash Milan out of sight they've not been watching football. We were playing Milan, who have lost three games all season, not Raggy-Arsed Rovers. I enjoyed the occasion but not the 90 minutes. I was looking at the clock, hoping it would get to 90 and be over. Clarence Seedorf was very difficult to get near, fantastic ability. But we worked our socks off."
The Milan coach, Massimiliano Allegri, described the result as hard on his team. "We played a really good game [but] if you don't score you get punished in this competition. Over the two games we deserved more than this. It leaves a bitter taste," he said.

Redknapp: attack is the best way to defend our first-leg advantage

Bale doubtful to start but Spurs manager pledges to stick with adventurous Champions League approach against Milan

The Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has promised to attack Milan in tonight's Champions League match at White Hart Lane. Spurs have a 1-0 lead from the first leg at San Siro but, rather than defend their away goal and play on the counter-attack, Redknapp has pledged to continue with the adventurous style that has been so successful in Europe so far, despite the probable absence of Gareth Bale.
"We all want to continue in the competition," Redknapp said yesterday. "It's a fantastic competition and once you've played in it you want more. It's wide open to win this year and we're still in it but we still have to beat Milan. They are a strong team but my message to the players will be, 'Let's get after them and try to score again'. We're not going to change our style of play, try to sit back and defend that away goal, that wouldn't be right for us."
Spurs' home games in the Champions League so far this season have tended to be high-scoring affairs and Redknapp expects a similar outcome this evening. In the play-off round his side beat Young Boys 4-0 at White Hart Lane, while in the group stage they saw off Twente 4-1, Internazionale 3-1 and Werder Bremen 3-0.
"We do score goals and sometimes have difficulty stopping them," Redknapp said, "but we pick an open team and we'll have a go tomorrow. They are coming here to win, they have to, and we're taking the same approach, so it's set up to be a fantastic game."
Redknapp said that Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is fit to play after a calf injury, and is likely to play behind Peter Crouch. Bale, however, is unlikely to start after failing to recover full fitness after injury. "He trained this morning," Redknapp said of the Welsh winger who was so effective in the match against Milan's city rivals Inter last November. "His back was OK but he felt a little stiff in his legs so we will wait until tomorrow to see how he is. It's touch and go. At the moment it would be doubtful whether he would be fit to start. He's desperate to play but won't if he's not 100 per cent."

Van Persie off as Barca beat Gunners again

Barcelona 3 Arsenal 1 (Barcelona win 4-3 on aggregate)

Arsenal were left with a sense of injustice after seeing Robin van Persie controversially sent off as they were knocked out of the Champions League again by Barcelona in the Nou Camp.
The Dutchman was a shock inclusion for the Gunners, who led 2-1 from the first leg, having recovered quicker than expected from the knee injury he sustained in the Carling Cup final.
However, moments after an own goal from Sergio Busquets had cancelled out Lionel Messi's fine opener following a terrible mistake by Cesc Fabregas, van Persie was given his marching orders by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca.
Van Persie had already been booked in the first half and was shown a second yellow card for lashing the ball towards goal after a marginal offside call which the Arsenal striker claimed he could not hear.
Barcelona took full advantage, with Xavi and then Messi's penalty putting the tie beyond Arsene Wenger's men, who were left to reflect on what might have been and must now regroup for Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Barclays Premier League title rivals Manchester United.
As expected, Barcelona went on the offensive from kick-off, cheered on by a passionate 95,000-strong crowd in the Nou Camp.
Laurent Koscielny made an important early block on Pedro and when the visitors did get possession, they were greeted by a cacophony of deafening whistles.
Koscielny and Jack Wilshere combined to deny Messi after, in a sign of things to come, Arsenal again gave away possession far too cheaply.
The Gunners were forced into a change on 16 minutes when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had to be replaced by Manuel Almunia after injuring his left hand making a routine save from Daniel Alves' long-range free-kick.
Barcelona continued to press Arsenal back, with Johan Djourou producing a superb saving tackle to deny Xavi with Pedro drilling the loose ball over the crossbar.
Barcelona then almost fluked an opening goal on 35 minutes when a curled cross from left-back Adriano struck the outside of the near post.
Tempers boiled over when Wilshere went to ground as he stretched for a loose ball at the edge of the Barcelona penalty area, the home players claiming a dive which led to van Persie and former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano squaring up before calm was eventually restored.
Van Persie had not calmed down and picked up a needless yellow card on the stroke of half-time for barging Alves over.
Fabregas, returning to his boyhood club for the first time, then inexplicably tried to backheel the ball to Wilshere on the edge the Arsenal penalty area, but gave it straight to Andres Iniesta.
Messi - who netted all four Barcelona goals in last season's game here - was away, and brilliantly chipped Almunia before lashing the ball into the empty net.
Arsenal looked to be facing an uphill battle for the second half, but were presented with a lifeline on 53 minutes.
Samir Nasri got away down the left and won a corner which he swung into the six-yard box where Busquets headed it past his own goalkeeper.
The tie then took another twist when van Persie latched onto a throughball, but was ruled offside, which looked marginal.
The Holland forward lashed the ball wide and was shown a second yellow card, swiftly followed by a red.
Van Persie and the Arsenal players could not believe it, as the striker claimed he could not hear the whistle.
Barcelona started the onslaught almost immediately, with first David Villa and then Messi denied by a couple of brave blocks from Almunia.
The Catalans finally regained the advantage on 68 minutes when Xavi slotted home after being played in following a quick exchange between Iniesta and Villa.
Before Arsenal could regroup, Barcelona were awarded a penalty when Koscielny tripped Pedro and Messi slotted it into the bottom corner to put Barcelona within touching distance of the last eight.
Wenger sent on Andrey Arshavin and then Nicklas Bendtner, replacing Fabregas, but it was more in hope than expectation.
Almunia denied Barcelona another goal with good blocks from Messi and substitute Ibrahim Afellay.
Bendtner was agonisingly close to connecting with Wilshere's cross into the six-yard box, but it was not to be for the Gunners.

United silent after Anfield defeat

Manchester United left Anfield beaten, bloodied - in Nani's case - and getting ready to be hit in the wallet after a blanket media no-show.
After Sunday's 3-1 defeat by Liverpool, Sir Alex Ferguson led a complete black-out of any media engagements, which given how much trouble he is in at present following midweek comments about referee Martin Atkinson is probably just as well.
Senior United officials were furious at how Jamie Carragher managed to get away with only a booking from Phil Dowd for his challenge on Nani that left the winger with a bad gash to his leg.
Carragher sent a message of apology into the United changing room immediately after the game, then waited for the player to emerge to reinforce his sorrow personally.
A picture of the open wound was posted on Twitter by a member of United's staff and had Ferguson been asked about the matter, his volcanic temper may have erupted once more. Instead, Ferguson kept his counsel, declining to speak with host broadcaster Sky Sports, either before or after his side's third Premier League defeat of the season.
His assistant Mike Phelan did not carry out his usual post-match engagements with the BBC, arranged due to Ferguson's long-standing feud with the organisation. Radio rights holders TalkSPORT were also left without any comment from the visitors.
Should any of these organisations complain to the Premier League, the governing body will be forced to act, escalating the problem between Ferguson and the BBC, the fines for his non-compliance still waiting to be made public.
For the first time, even United's own television channel, MUTV, left a senior game without any reaction. It is not yet known whether the media blackout will continue this week, ahead of United's FA Cup quarter-final with Arsenal, although discussions are bound to take place behind the scenes.
The only comments came via a club spokesman, who confirmed Nani will be assessed tomorrow before the extent of his injury is known, although given the delicate manner in which he made his way out of the stadium, his chances of facing Arsenal on Sunday, and Marseille in the Champions League on March 15 do not look good.
There was also a view from Rio Ferdinand, who was not even at Anfield as he is currently sidelined with a calf problem, but the England skipper said on Twitter: "Bad result today no excuses."
