Paul Scholes: A career in pictures

From his debut in 1994 through to his final appearance for Manchester United in the 2011 Champions League final, we chart the career of the midfield maestro.




DEBUT...Scholes makes his Premier League debut on September 24, 1994 against Ipswich. He would go on to scores five goals in 17 league appearances during his first season for United.





DOUBLE...During the 1995-96 season Scholes scored 10 goals in 26 league appearances as the Red Devils won the Premier League and FA Cup double.





INTERNATIONAL DEBUT...May 24, 1997, Scholes makes his international debut as a substitute against South Africa at Old Trafford. On his first start for the Three Lions the following month, Scholes scored against Italy.




1998 WORLD CUP...Selected for England's World Cup squad, Scholes scored the second goal as England win opening match of the finals 2-0 versus Tunisia




ENGLAND HAT-TRICK...In March of 1999, Scholes scores a hat-trick in the 3-1 win against Poland in a Euro 2000 qualifier at Wembley.




THE TREBLE...1999 sees United complete a historic treble of European Cup, Premier League and FA Cup but Scholes misses the European Cup final triumph over Bayern Munich through suspension.



GREAT GOAL...Bradford v Manchester United (Premier League, March 2000): David Beckham's delivery from the corner was inch-perfect, picking out Scholes in his usual position just outside the box. Scholes watched the ball come across across his body and then, with perfect technique, met it with a fierce right-foot volley that flew inside the post.




THE AULD ENEMY...Scores twice for England in a vital 2-0 win over Scotland in Euro 2000 play-off first leg at Hampden Park.



GREAT GOAL...Manchester United v Panathinaikos (Champions League, November 2000): Scholes was involved twice in the build-up as Manchester United pieced together a 32-pass move. Teddy Sheringham flicked David Beckham's pass on to Scholes, who floated a sublime chip over Panathinaikos goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis to seal a 3-1 win.





ANOTHER WORLD CUP...The 2001-02 season ends with Scholes on eight goals in 35 league appearances before taking part in England's World Cup challenge, which sees them reaches the quarter-finals.




SEASON BEST...Scholes scored a best-ever 14 league goals in the 2002-03 season as United won their eighth Premier League title, including a hat-trick in a 6-2 win at Newcastle. Adds six goals in other competitions to finish the season with 20.




INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT...On August 3, 2004 Scholes made the shock announcement he is retiring from international football at the age of 29.




FA CUP HEARTBREAK...Missed a penalty in the 2005 FA Cup final shoot-out as rivals Arsenal triumphed in Cardiff following a goalless draw




GREAT GOAL...Aston Villa v Manchester United (Premier League, December 2006): Ryan Giggs' corner was headed clear but the ball fell to Scholes, whose sweet volley from 25 yards dipped over helpless Aston Villa goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, brushing the underside of the crossbar on its way in.



GREAT GOAL...Manchester United v Barcelona (Champions League semi-final, second leg, April 2008): After a goalless first leg, Scholes' unstoppable strike booked Manchester United a place in the final against Chelsea. Gianluca Zambrotta had halted Cristiano Ronaldo's run but his pass went straight to Scholes, who took a touch and before unleashing a swerving shot into the top corner.





BARCA BEAUTY...Scholes scored that fantastic winner in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona to secure a 1-0 aggregate triumph before helping United lift the European Cup in Moscow, beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.




FINAL SEASON...Playing a lesser role, Scholes still managed to have an eventful end to his career. He was sent off as United lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. He then helped United win their record 19th English league title. The last game of his career came as a substitute at Wembley, in the 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final.
